Landscape with Castle
The oldest known representation of siege of Brest of (by?) the Duke of Lancaster in 1386.
Chronicles of Jean Froissart. Manuscript of the 15th century French school. The scene is not realistic or in the phases of combat, or in the materials used (the bomb on wheels). The sea does not even figure in the landscape.
However, this miniature symbolizes the strategic importance of the place of Brest in the late Middle Ages and the bitterness of the struggle for control.
